PERTH AMBOY, NJ-- With the Thanksgiving holiday just days away, the City of Perth Amboy is highlighting the work of the 10 local food pantries and encouraging residents who are able to donate non-perishables and their time to support neighbors in need.
Supplied primarily by the Community Food Bank of New Jersey and Middlesex County’s REPLENISH program, the pantries share information and cooperate with one another through the Perth Amboy Coalition of Food Pantries, supported by the City’s Director of Human Services, Dianne Roman.
“The level of cooperation we see between our many food pantries is truly inspiring,” Roman said. “All of them share the common goal of ensuring each of our residents do not go to bed hungry. I am proud that the City is able to help them in their incredibly noble mission.”
Perth Amboy keeps track of the numbers of people who use the pantries and aggressively seeks support from donors and grants. Roman praised the selfless work of the residents who run the day-to-day operations of the pantries, such as Elia Alvarez from “Iglesia Ciudad de Refugio,” which translates to “City of Refuge Church” in English.
The church, located at 436 Market St., has operated a pantry for more than 12 years and distributes food on Saturday mornings. Alvarez acknowledged the steadfast volunteers and donors who keep distribution possible week after week.
“Our volunteers all contribute solely out of the goodness of their hearts,” Alvarez said. “Many have told me getting involved was a life changing experience for them.”
Alvarez noted the additional strain on the food pantries during the first week in November, when the shutdown of the federal government paused SNAP benefits for many low income residents. While the benefits are restored, Alvarez said the day-to-day uncertainty reaffirmed the importance of the pantries’ work.
“There was an extra level of appreciation when people accepted food during our November 1 distribution,” she said. “We were grateful to be able to give them all we had. Had the benefits remained paused, we would not have been able to meet the demand. It’s important that all residents recognize the difference they can make in someone’s life by donating or volunteering.”
Another organization providing crucial support for Perth Amboy residents is the Cathedral Community Development Corporation (CCDC). CCDC, located at 277 Madison Ave., is dedicated to a people-first approach, according to Executive Director Reverend Tina Adams.
“Our core focus areas are providing food assistance to those in need, distributing clothing to individuals facing hardship and offering case management and counseling services,” Reverend Adams said. “We strive to ensure that no family is left without essential support.”
In addition to its food pantry, which opens each Wednesday and the second Saturday of each month, CDCC hosts a Community Soup Kitchen & More every Wednesday from noon to 4 p.m., where volunteers serve a sit-down meal in a comfortable setting.
Perth Amboy Mayor Helmin J. Caba lauded the City’s pantries and encouraged residents to support them during the extended holiday season.
“Thanksgiving is a time when we lean on one another,” Mayor Caba said. “It’s painful to know that some of our neighbors are struggling with food insecurity, especially now. Our team works closely with the food pantries throughout the year, but they can’t do it alone. If you’re able, please consider donating or volunteering. Your support makes a real difference for families across our city.”
