Long Branch, NJ – June 21, 2023 – Monmouth Medical Center, an RWJBarnabas Health facility, celebrated the groundbreaking of the Vogel Medical Campus at Tinton Falls on Tuesday. The campus will offer seamless access to surgical and imaging services and comprehensive cancer care together with Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey, the state’s only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center.

“We are proud of the trust and confidence placed in us to transform health care in the region through the development of the Vogel Medical Campus,” said Eric Carney, President and Chief Executive Officer of Monmouth Medical Center and Monmouth Medical Center Southern Campus. “Together, we will continue to work with our patients, families, clinicians and partners to advance health care in our communities.”

Monmouth Medical Center has engaged in years of planning to reach this important milestone, working with local community members and partners to develop a new campus that will provide exceptional, patient-centered care close to home for more Monmouth County residents.

“Our collective investment in Monmouth Medical Center, through the Vogel Medical Campus, allows us to expand access to high-quality, equitable care to the residents of Monmouth County and beyond,” said Mark E. The five-story, 150,000-square-foot outpatient center, located at the historic Fort Monmouth Myer Center site, is set to open in 2025 and will honor Fort Monmouth’s legacy of innovation. The campus will leverage the very latest advancements in medical space planning and technology to provide easy access for patients and their loved ones and an ideal space for physicians to deliver the highest caliber of care.

The new medical campus is designed to enhance the patient experience by providing comprehensive same-day surgery, on-site specialty physician offices and advanced diagnostic imaging. Multiple floors will be dedicated exclusively to state-of-the-art cancer services, offering a comprehensive oncology clinic and centers for state-of-the-art infusion and radiation therapy treatment.

MIDDLETOWN, NJ: Due to the heavy rain and accumulating snow conditions predicted to reach the area Monday evening into Tuesday, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) placed the Port Monmouth facility into "Operational Mode” at 4:30 PM, February 12.

According to reports, the amount of precipitation is predicted to be 1 inch of rain with the possibility of accumulating snow. Strong north/north-easterly winds to west/north-westerly winds are possible with coastal areas receiving 43 mph gusts. High tide is anticipated to be at 10:40 AM Tuesday, with the tide predicted to be +5 with a level of uncertainty as high as +5.9 (rain/snow in region). The next high tide is expected to be at 11:11 PM Tuesday, with a tide predicted to be +4.2 with a level of uncertainty as high as +5.0 (rain/snow in region).

Note the status of the Port Monmouth Control Facilities:

The Pews Creek Tide Gate is ready to function as designed and was placed in "Operational Mode" on Monday, February 12th at 4:30 PM. The operation will allow the gates to automatically open and close based on the tides while ensuring the interior drainage basin does not exceed elevation +5.0 NAVD88. It also allows for the gates to open during low tide cycles so the water can move in and out of the basin to assist the eco system.

The Road Closure Gate on Old Port Monmouth Road remains open, and no action is planned at this time. DEP will monitor tides and coordinate with the Township and County should weather change and require closure.

The DEP utilizes multiple weather and tide sites to assess the need for tide gates, pump stations, and road closure gates to be placed in operational mode in order to reduce flood risk. All operations are based on storm and tidal predictions and can change as storms approach and pass through the region.

Flooding

The Township may close some roads due to flooding. Do not drive your vehicle through flood waters as water may be deeper than you think. You will be putting yourself in danger and your vehicle may be damaged. If you live in an area that is prone to flooding, we advise you to move your vehicle to higher ground tonight. If necessary, you can park at the Middletown Train Station parking lots. The Middletown Township Office of Emergency Management also recommends securing any loose items on your property.

A grocery store with a somewhat fanatical following is expanding in Monmouth County as a new Trader Joe’s is planned for Middletown.

Middletown Mayor Tony Perry told APP.com:

It’s very exciting to be able to attract a very large and well-known name like Trader Joe's to come to Middletown. For years, residents have been asking me when Middletown is going to get its Trader Joe's.

The store is going into the Middletown Plaza on Route 35 at the site of a former Walgreens.

Trader Joe's stores are typically smaller than traditional grocery stores, and they have a more limited selection of products. However, the products that Trader Joe's does carry are often of higher quality and more unique than what you can find at other stores.

The company was founded in 1967 by Joe Coulombe, who was inspired by the European-style markets he had visited while traveling. It is headquartered in Monrovia, California.

MIDDLETOWN, NJ — Monmouth County is seeking to buy Port Monmouth Elementary School building from the Middletown school district, Patch has exclusively learned.

This was mentioned very briefly at the Tuesday night Middletown Board of Education meeting, but Board President Frank Capone provided Patch with many more details:

Monmouth County has now offered to pay the Middletown school district $2.5 million for the building, said Capone. He said the district accepted their offer.

Capone said he's "happy" with the deal, assuming it goes through. Middletown also has to get approval from the NJ Department of Education to sell the building.

Capone said an appraisal done by the school district a year ago appraised the building for $2.1 million. However, a more recent appraisal done by the Monmouth County Parks System appraised the building at $2.5 million, said Tony Fiore, the vice chairman of the Monmouth Parks Board.

"I know some testing and so on has to be done on their end (Monmouth County)," said Capone.

In March 2020, just before the pandemic, the Middletown school board took the controversial vote (parents, students and teachers cried while the board members voted) to close Port Monmouth Elementary in June of that year, citing dwindling enrollment and budget cuts from Trenton. The district said the 92-year-old building needed $4 million in upgrades to keep it operational.

The 195 Port Monmouth students were transferred to New Monmouth.

Port Monmouth School, on Main Street, has sat empty ever since then, although it was used last year as the props and make-up headquarters when movie "Miranda's Victim" filmed in Middletown. Also, Middletown Township briefly considered turning it into an indoor rec center, but those plans fell through.

Then in November, Patch was first to report that the Monmouth County Park System was considering opening an indoor aquatic center somewhere in the county. One of the main places they were eying for it was Port Monmouth Elementary.

Capone said the Board and district officials are currently discussing what to do with the $2.5 million. It is a major windfall for the Middletown school district, which experiences yearly budget cuts from Trenton.

Monmouth County Parks Director Andrew Spears told Patch last fall: "The (aquatic) center, if constructed, would support competitive swim programs, including those offered by area high schools, as well as instructional and fitness aquatic programs."

Last year, residents were asked to fill out this survey to gauge their interest in an indoor swim center in Monmouth County.
