EDISON, NJ — Edison Public Library will be hosting a groundbreaking ceremony to mark the start of a major revitalization project at the North Edison Branch.

The ceremony will take place at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 24. In attendance will be local dignitaries and library officials. The public is also invited to attend.

The renovation is expected to take around 15 months, with construction adding an estimated 8,000 square feet to the current facility.

"We are excited to break ground on this transformative project, which will greatly enhance our library’s ability to serve the growing needs of the North Edison community," Allan M. Kleiman, MLS, director of the Edison Public Library, said in a statement.

Due to the pending construction work, the last day for library services at the branch is anticipated to be Saturday, March 1 with final plans for a temporary location for the North Edison Branch Library underway.

According to Kleiman, this long-anticipated project will enhance the library’s offerings and transform the space into a modern, accessible, and community-focused hub for education, events, and the arts.

The new design will provide updates to various areas of the library, including:

The library’s exterior will feature a local rain garden, reinforcing the community’s commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship.

“Our North Edison Branch first opened its doors to the community more than a half-century ago and, while there have been expansions and renovations over the years, the building last saw a major update in 1992,” Kleiman said.

“With expanded space, improved amenities, and a focus on sustainability, this renovation will ensure that the North Edison Branch Library remains a welcoming space for all.”

The contract for construction was awarded to Pal-Pro Builders, LLC of Garfield, NJ by the Edison Public Library's Board of Trustees on Dec. 23, 2024 and is being managed by Mark Berkowsky and Associates of Cranbury, NJ.

The Edison Public Library’s North Edison Branch Library is located at 777 Grove Avenue. In the event of inclement weather, the groundbreaking ceremony will take place on Thursday, Feb. 27 at 11 a.m.

NJ.com is reporting that Rainforest Cafe at Menlo Park Mall in Edison is now closed for good.

Its last day was yesterday (February 19).

This closure means there is only one Rainforest Cafe left in New Jersey.

The only location left is in Atlantic City. You can find it on the boardwalk.

It was such a cool place.

It has a rainforest/jungle theme with jungle sounds and animatronic animals.

Kids (and adults) loved the nostalgic feel and jungle vibes.

Landry's Inc., operator of the Rainforest Cafe restaurant chain revealed the reason for the closure.

It wasn't the decision of the restaurant.

Its lease was not renewed by the mall.

"For the last 26 years, Menlo Park Rainforest Cafe has been a beloved destination for families, bringing the magic of the jungle to the community. Unfortunately, our lease was not renewed, so we have no choice but to close our doors at the end of business on February 19, 2025. We are grateful for the years of support from our loyal guests and dedicated team members," said Terry Turner, COO of Landry's Inc.

Rainforest Cafe was on the lower level of the mall near Macy's.

No word what will take its place. I'm hoping it just doesn't sit empty.

It sounds like Rainforest Cafe is searching for another location in NJ (hopefully not far from the Edison location).

Lots of excitement is returning to New Jersey, and it's doing it in ways most everyone can appreciate. And what perfect timing is there other than the very beginning of spring?

That's exactly what's happening at the New Jersey Convention and Exposition Center. Not one, but two great shows happening at the same time.

The first one is all about trains and toys, while the other is all about chocolate. Think about it. Chocolate, toys, and model trains? Yes, please.

But in all seriousness, both of these expos have come to New Jersey in the past, and are thrilled to be returning for another year of great fun. Not only that, but you'll also have an opportunity to meet some pretty cool celebrities.

The first of two events coming to the New Jersey Expo Center is the Greenberg Train and Toy Show. It's the biggest and the longest-running train show that hits the Garden State year after year.

According to their website, "The shows feature thousands of trains and collectible toys for sale, hundreds of merchandising tables, huge operating layouts, free modeling seminars, and more."

For anyone who's into model trains, this event is for you. The Greenberg Train and Model Show is happening on March 29 and March 30 at the NJ Expo Center in Edison. Both days are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and you can get more info on the show here.

But that's not the only show coming to the Expo Center that weekend. For those who have a sweet tooth, this one is perfect for you.

On the same weekend as Greenburg's Great Train and Toy Show is another very sweet experience. Happening on the other side of the facility is The Chocolate Expo.

Tons of chocolate includes over 50 vendors complete with tastings, baked goods, craft beverages, and more. There's even a featured kids zone, making this a perfect weekend for the family.

And to make the expo even sweeter are the celebrity guests that'll be showing up to the expo.

According to the official Chocolate Expo Website, "The Brady's will be participating in a Panel Discussion each day at 10:30 a.m.," and "Eddie Munster will be participating in a Panel Discussion each day at 1:30 p m."

Metuchen introduced an ordinance authorizing a rights-of-way agreement with Comcast.

METUCHEN, NJ – Comcast will bring its internet and cable services to Metuchen.

During Monday’s Council meeting, Metuchen introduced an ordinance authorizing a rights-of-way agreement with Comcast.

The ordinance permits the installation, use, and maintenance of cable and internet facilities by Comcast in Metuchen.

“For years, residents have expressed their desire for more choices in internet and cable providers. While there was a misconception of a monopoly in the Borough, the reality was that providers hesitated to invest here due to the financial commitment required to establish infrastructure in Metuchen,” Mayor Jonathan M Busch said.

“Over the past year, we have actively engaged with Comcast, working to secure their investment in our community. After months of negotiations, at this Monday's Council meeting, we will consider the introduction of an ordinance permitting Comcast to begin laying lines throughout Metuchen.”

According to the ordinance, the Borough’s consent is and shall be conditional upon Comcast’s application and it obtaining the required authorization from the Board to construct, operate, and maintain a cable television system within Metuchen.

Comcast will have to comply with all existing and future applicable ordinances and they have to enter into a written agreement with the Metuchen to indemnify and hold the Borough harmless as to all claims and liability resulting from any injury or damage caused by Comcast which may arise from the construction, installation, and any related work.

“While it will likely take a few years before Comcast is able to provide residents and businesses with service, this is a major step forward for our community,” Busch said.

“Competition among service providers typically means better options, improved service, and more competitive pricing for everyone.”

A public hearing on the ordinance is scheduled for Feb. 10.

“We are continuously looking at opportunities to bring our Xfinity and Comcast Business services to more residents and businesses in New Jersey and beyond and are working towards that with the Borough of Metuchen council,” Comcast said in a statement to Patch.

A grand Iftaar dinner was held on Friday, March 14, evening at the King Palace banquet hall in Edison, NJ, bringing together a large gathering of South Asian community members, primarily from Pakistan and India, to break their fasts and celebrate the holy month of Ramadan in a spirit of unity and reflection.

The evening commenced with a soulful recitation from the Holy Quran, setting a serene and spiritual tone. This was followed by a moving Nasheed performance, captivating the audience and filling the hall with an air of reverence and harmony.

The event was organized by Adnan Khawaja, Waqas Hashim Sunny, Baseer, and Mohammed Atif, who worked diligently to bring together community members, elected officials, nonprofit organizations, and local business owners. Many nonprofits and business leaders were present, demonstrating strong community involvement and collaboration. The Edison Muslim Community Center (EMCC) was among the notable supporters of the event, providing valuable backing and encouragement to ensure its success.

One of the most notable aspects of the evening was the attendance of several elected officials from New York and New Jersey, underscoring the significance of the gathering and the growing influence of the Muslim community in the region.

Edison Mayor Sam Joshi was the highlight of the event. In his address, Mayor Joshi extended warm greetings to the Muslim community for Ramadan and acknowledged their valuable contributions to the township. He also shared significant news regarding the township’s ongoing efforts to support the Muslim community. “We are working on many projects and programs to uplift and assist our diverse community,” he stated, adding the exciting announcement that a brand-new grand mosque will soon be opening on Plainfield Avenue. “This mosque will serve as a central hub for worship, education, and community activities for our growing Muslim population,” he declared to enthusiastic applause.

The event was further enriched by the presence of Federation of Indian Associations (FIA) Chairman Ankur Vaidya, accompanied by FIA officials Srujal Parikh and others. They conveyed heartfelt wishes to the community for a blessed Ramadan, emphasizing the importance of cross-cultural unity and mutual respect. Other notable attendees included Kashif Hussain, Deputy Public Advocate for Infrastructure & Environmental Justice in New York City, and Ilayas Quraishi, Chief Operating Officer of Parikh Worldwide and ITV GOLD TV Channel, whose presence added further prestige to the occasion.

Several other prominent figures attended, including Siraj Bohra from Alwali Mosque, officials from APNA New Jersey, and representatives from local organizations such as MCNJ (Muslim Center of New Jersey), NBIC (New Brunswick Islamic Center), and Mom for Pantry, all of whom were acknowledged and appreciated for their continuous service and dedication to the community.

The Iftaar dinner stood as a remarkable evening of faith, fellowship, and shared commitment to fostering a strong, inclusive, and thriving community in Edison and beyond.
