The day before Thanksgiving at Delicious Orchards in Colts Neck can be described as one part chaos, one part tradition and a lot of pies and doughnuts.For the last six years, New 12 New Jersey photojournalist Ryan Beckman and reporter Jim Murdoch have made it their own tradition to capture all the controlled chaos on video.By closing time on Wednesday, Delicious Orchards will have sold 50,000 pies this week and 40,000 doughnuts today alone....

The day before Thanksgiving at Delicious Orchards in Colts Neck can be described as one part chaos, one part tradition and a lot of pies and doughnuts.

For the last six years, New 12 New Jersey photojournalist Ryan Beckman and reporter Jim Murdoch have made it their own tradition to capture all the controlled chaos on video.

By closing time on Wednesday, Delicious Orchards will have sold 50,000 pies this week and 40,000 doughnuts today alone.

“We really try and stay in our lane,” said Mike McDonald, of Delicious Orchards. “We try and do what we do well do, what people know us for, and we maintain that quality that people have known for over 100 years.”

Lines started forming early in the morning as Wednesday’s storms cleared up.

East Windsor resident Bob Kierner says, “I was concerned a little about the flooding, but I did watch News 12 in the morning. They showed us where it was flooding, where it was not, so I knew coming here wouldn't be a problem.”

With the bad overnight weather now a distant memory, the shopping began.

Delicious Orchards dates all the way back to 1911. For the last half century, the market has been run by the McDonald family. Wednesday of Thanksgiving week has long been the company’s busiest day of the year, with 300 employees staffing round the clock.

Michael Manhardt, of Los Angeles, says “What happened last night was I got on the red eye at 11:50 p.m. out of LAX, slept on the airplane. As soon as I landed at Newark, I got my rental car and came directly to Delicious Orchards.”

For many people, visiting Delicious Orchards is not just about the food, it's also about creating memories – seeing the entire experience of their operation, going home with a tasty pie and a sleeve of doughnuts, and creating new memories that last generations.

Joe Davis, of Hazlet, comes every year. “It's all about tradition," says Davis.

As busy as it is, visitors won't spend a lot of time waiting in line. This is something Delicious Orchards prepare for all year.

On Thanksgiving Eve, doors close at 7 p.m. And as always, the market is closed for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Colts Neck School Board Results: 'Colts Kids First' Team Elected

COLTS NECK, NJ — The Colts Kids First team - Jason Orrico, Kevin T. Walsh, Vincent Rugnetta and Angelique Volpe - swept the Colts Neck Board of Education election Tuesday, in unofficial results.Board President Heather Tormey, the only incumbent seeking re-election, was not voted back into office. The other members of her Collaboration, Communication, Consideration team were also not successful in their bids for first terms on the board.Other board members still completing terms, who are not affiliated with Colts Kids Firs...

COLTS NECK, NJ — The Colts Kids First team - Jason Orrico, Kevin T. Walsh, Vincent Rugnetta and Angelique Volpe - swept the Colts Neck Board of Education election Tuesday, in unofficial results.

Board President Heather Tormey, the only incumbent seeking re-election, was not voted back into office. The other members of her Collaboration, Communication, Consideration team were also not successful in their bids for first terms on the board.

Other board members still completing terms, who are not affiliated with Colts Kids First, are Alison DeNoia, Brenna Dillon and Amy Dimes.

That means that in January, the nine-member board will have six self-avowed "socially and fiscally conservative" members, according to board member John Camera.

Camera was elected last year on the slate, along with Jessica Ramirez and another candidate who could not be seated because he did not live in town at the time of his candidate filing. That unexpired term was won Tuesday by another member of the Colts Kids First Team.

The election results will not be final and certified until all mail-in and provisional ballots are counted, Camera noted. But he said he is confident the team will be seated in January.

Tormey and her team congratulated the winners:

"Our team extends a sincere congratulations to our Colts Kids First opponents on a well fought win. This was not an easy election for our community; all of our passionate efforts were extremely forceful as they were centered around our children and community," she said in a statement.

She also thanked the team's supporters and the Colts Neck Township Education Association - "the true heroes" who impact students' futures.

Camera has been a leader of the current Colts Kids First members on the board, including pushing for amendments to Policy 5756, which provides guidance regarding transgender students, such as communication with parents. Schools were not required to notify parents if students came out as transgender, particularly if there was concern of abuse by parents because of the "outing."

Many districts found they could respond on a case-by-case basis to such a scenario and protect a student, yet keep parents in the loop.

However, some districts in the state are repealing or amending the policy. Colts Neck tabled action on amendments to require notification this summer, a move Camera opposed.

The board, led by Tormey, did not want to be another defendant in an expensive discrimination lawsuit by the state Attorney General, who is suing districts such as Marlboro and Manalapan-Englishtown and Middletown that did amend the policy.

In the interim, the state acknowledged the policy is not mandatory and Colts Neck was able to freely rescind it, with no blowback from the state - which the board did.

But the cultural issues raised did evoke lots of reaction - often angry and emotional - and put Colts Neck and other school boards in the spotlight.

COLTS NECK, NJ — A reading Sunday of "The Night Before Christmas" poem is not only a holiday celebration, but a way to mark the contributions of political figure Lillian G. Burry to both the township and Monmouth County.

The Colts Neck Historical Preservation Committee is hosting the free, traditional holiday fest at the historic Montrose Schoolhouse, located at the corner of Montrose Road and Cedar Drive, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 3.

Seasonal refreshments and holiday music by the Mike Wells Trio will fill the historic one-room schoolhouse, organizers say.

But an important attraction may well be Burry herself.

The longtime Monmouth County commissioner (now serving her sixth, three-year term), former Colts Neck mayor and avid supporter of historic preservation in the county is stepping down from the county board at the end of the year.

Burry, the historical committee's chairperson, will read "The Night Before Christmas" to children (and grownups) at the event. Author Clement Clarke Moore claimed authorship, in 1837, of the poem, one of the most well known in America.

And Santa Claus is admittedly another big attraction and will pose for photos (at no cost, in keeping with the season). The Christmas tree inside the school will be festooned with decorations appropriate to the period of the Montrose Schoolhouse.

But with Burry not running for re-election as County Commissioner, the historical committee will also celebrate her "numerous years of public service to Colts Neck and the county" during the festivities, organizers say.

It is also selling its map depicting Colts Neck historic sites, (suitable for framing) for $10. "A Tour of Historic Colts Neck," a booklet written by Burry, is also available for $5.

Despite the praise to be coming her way, Burry's focus is, as usual, on the event and its historical significance, a specialty of hers since her days as a history and political science major at Wagner College. She was also elected to the National History Fraternity, and in 2005 was granted the Wagner College Fellow in Political Science.

"With each passing year, we continue to have a strong turnout and receive great praise for this wonderful town tradition, and we hope to continue this tradition for years to come." said Burry.

Everyone on the historical committee, she said, "enjoys preparing and opening the Montrose Schoolhouse for special events that highlight our township's unique role in 19th-century America. Along with her devotion to history, Burry is very much a modern woman.

Burry pioneered the real estate industry as a broker of record and owner of Colts Neck Realty. Married to Capt. Donald Burry, retired from the Coast Guard, the couple has a daughter, two grandchildren and three great grandchildren, according to her county bio.

Despite her departure from county government, Burry has said she plans to maintain her many civic commitments.

“While public life may be a brief candle, civic life is something limited only by life itself. I find that now is the time to bring the years of my political life to a close, but to assure all of you who have counted on my support for the good things that make Monmouth County such a wonderful place to live that my voice will not fall silent as I explore new ways to be of service," she said when she announced she was not seeking re-election to the county board.

And she imparted her sense of the long view history provides:

"The deeds we do, the things we create, built on the strong foundation of centuries past and providing the future with a secure place to stand, will endure long beyond our hour upon the stage."

The senior tailback cemented his name into the Colts Neck record books by running for 185 yards and four touchdowns to become the new all-time leading rusher in school history now with 3,490 yards.

“It feels amazing,” Scully said about becoming Colts Neck’s all-time leading rusher. “I knew I had to have a big game to help us win and that meant breaking the record. There’s no better feeling. I’m really happy.”

Scully broke Gargiulo’s record in style on the first play of the fourth quarter with a 10-yard touchdown run. He would the finishing touches on his special day later on in the quarter with a 35-yard touchdown run.

Scully’s record-breaking day for Colts Neck also included a 77-yard kickoff return for a touchdown to give him 21 total touchdowns on the season.

Becoming the school’s all-time leading rusher wouldn’t be possible without his coaches and teammates, Scully said.

“Everybody up front did a great job and my fullback (Jack Lefkowitz) has been making key blocks for me all season,” Scully said. “We’re a veteran group and we’ve putting it all together this season.”

Scully added that this Colts Neck team is a “special group” that can make a lot of noise in the postseason.

“We have a great group of guys. We’re rolling into the postseason and hopefully, we can make a great run in the playoffs,” Scully said.

Senior quarterback Dom Beninato threw two touchdown passes in the Colts Neck victory. One was a 29-yard touchdown pass to Tesio Carabello and the other was a three-yard toss to John Sherrod. Senior running back Devin Donnelly also had a touchdown run in the victory for the Cougars.

With the victory over Long Branch, Colts Neck (5-3) clinches a share of the Colonial Division title with Point Pleasant Boro.

Long Branch (4-4) was led by running back Da’Von Craft, who had 108 yards rushing with two touchdowns. Earnest Reevey rushed for 89 yards from under center for the Green Wave with a touchdown.
