PERTH AMBOY — Perth Amboy exorcised years of frustration in one single evening on Friday, Oct. 17, as the Panthers celebrated Senior Night with a rousing 34-14 victory over Scotch Plains-Fanwood in a contest not nearly as close as the score might indicate.
Perth Amboy (1-7) amassed a 27-0 advantage by halftime and led 34-0 with its starters on the bench before the Raiders (2-5) managed to score two late touchdowns in the final 3:15, snapping a 16-game losing streak and earning its first home-field victory since Sept. 16, 2022.
“The kids deserve this more than anything,” Perth Amboy coach William Clark stated. “We try to keep them positive, keep them motivated in the right direction to get them to do things the right way all of the time. Amauris got hot, our receivers were catching the ball, unlike they were doing earlier in the season, the defense was playing lights out and things started falling into place.”
Junior quarterback Amauris Peguero led the assault by completing 9 of 15 passes for 224 yards and 4 touchdowns, not including a 67-yard scoring pass that was nullified by a holding penalty.

It was my job to hit them and I did that,” Peguero explained. “It feels great, I’m just very grateful for the win and very happy to celebrate with my family and my friends and my teammates."
Perth Amboy’s first score was a harbinger for the evening, a 27-yard Peguero pass that ricocheted off the hands of intended receiver Ariel Rosario into the awaiting arms of senior Zishawn Majette in the end zone. In other games, this pass would have been intercepted or fallen incomplete, but not on this night.
“He tipped it and God just gave me the ability to go up and get the ball,” Majette said. “If he caught it himself that would have been a great play by him, I’m all about the team. In my eyes we’re all one person.”
Scotch Plains fumbled on the second play of its second possession, with Sebastian Medina Moreno recovering for the Panthers. Peguero and Rosario (4-133-2 receiving) connected for 24 yards to set up Emmanuel Cambero’s 3-yard touchdown run off a direct snap.
The entire contest could be summed up by the ensuing short kickoff, which Ronald Estevez outraced the Raiders to recover for the Panthers. Peguero found Rosario on the very next play for a 35-yard score and the rout was on. Perth Amboy increased its lead to 27 points on a 2-yard pass to Cambero midway through the second quarter.
While the offense was putting up big numbers, Perth Amboy’s defense limited the Raiders to 47 yards of total offense in the first half, 7 rushing yards on 16 carries, feeding off the positivity provided by the offense.
“Whenever we called blitzes we went through, we got the tackle and did everything we were supposed to do,” said Majette, a linebacker who injured an ankle early in the third quarter and did not return. “We made some mistakes but we made up on the next play and I’m truly happy for that. I’m blessed to see my team play like this and see the team happy.”
The Panthers led 27-0 before committing their first penalty and their lone turnover came on their final possession with reserves on the field.
Perth Amboy triggered the mercy rule and a running clock on Peguero’s 69-yard scoring pass to Rosario on the final play of the third quarter.
The Raiders had a fourth down at the Perth Amboy 3-yard line late in the third quarter, with starters on the field, but Ricardo Henriquez delivered a punishing hit that stopped Ryan Gilligan in his tracks. Scotch Plains finally found the end zone on a 19-yard pass from Logan Weiss to Joey Reeves with 3:15 remaining and added a second score on a 1-yard plunge by Paul Boyle on the game’s final play following the Panthers’ lone turnover.
It was far too little and far too late.
“Hopefully it was a lesson learned tonight and we’ll move on to next week with the same type of game plan and same type of intensity with the kids,” said Clark. “It was a great atmosphere, pretty much the best crowd we’ve had all year and the kids rose to the occasion and it made them feel good.”

Perth Amboy officials have extended the deadline for “innovative” development proposals to transform a 9-acre tract at a prominent entry point to the city.
The Perth Amboy Redevelopment Agency is seeking mixed-use development and parking proposals that include entertainment or hospitality elements for the parcel at Smith Street and Convery Boulevard.
The site serves as a key gateway for motorists entering the city via the Victory Bridge, which carries traffic on Route 35 over the Raritan River.
Development submissions were originally due by Oct. 15, but the deadline has been extended to Dec. 12.
“This is a call to action for creative minds to envision and realize a space that will stand as a testament to our city’s resilience and renewal,” Perth Amboy Mayor Helmin J. Caba said in a statement.
For decades, visitors approaching Perth Amboy have encountered a large brownfield dotted with deteriorating buildings and discarded tires. The 9-acre parcel represents a key component of the larger 44-acre $110 million redevelopment project aimed at creating a vibrant new face for the city.
Tashilee Vazquez, executive director of the Perth Amboy Redevelopment Agency, said officials want the redevelopment to serve as an attractive entrance that complements the Smith Street commercial corridor and capitalizes on the planned billion-dollar Riverton mixed-use project across the Raritan River in Sayreville.
“We are looking for the respondents to be creative and innovative with their concepts,” Vazquez said, adding that proposals must also be realistic. The tract will be prepared and ready for the chosen developer.

The broader redevelopment initiative encompasses multiple elements beyond the request for proposals. About 25 acres will house a one-story, 471,000-square-foot warehouse designed to minimize traffic impacts through specific truck routing and natural screening.
An additional nine acres will be remediated for passive recreation, featuring natural areas around Sonnaman’s Creek with trails leading to a gazebo overlooking the Raritan River.
The complete redevelopment project is expected to generate more than 400 long-term jobs and exceed $1 million in local tax revenue once finished.
Vazquez highlighted Perth Amboy’s transportation advantages, including a downtown NJTransit train station, marina, and public transportation system as factors attracting investor interest.
“Perth Amboy is poised to become a beacon of growth and opportunity,” she said. “And the particular corner we’re focusing on with this RFP offers a blank canvas—a canvas upon which we can paint a vibrant, mixed-use community that enhances our quality of life and generates substantial tax revenue.”
The site previously housed a roofing company that manufactured asbestos shingles before closing 25 years ago.
