Understanding Bunions
What Is a Bunion?
A bunion, medically known as hallux valgus, is a bony bump that develops on the joint at the base of your big toe. This deformity occurs when some of the bones in the front part of your foot move out of place, causing the tip of your big toe to pull toward the smaller toes. This forces the joint at the base of your big toe to stick out, creating the characteristic bunion bump.
As the bunion develops, the big toe may angle more severely toward the second toe, sometimes even crossing over or under it. The bunion bump can become red, swollen, and painful, especially when wearing shoes. The surrounding soft tissue may also become inflamed, and the skin over the bump may thicken and become painful.
What Causes Bunions?
Bunions develop from a combination of factors:
- Genetics and family history: Inherited foot structure and biomechanics play a significant role in bunion development
- Foot structure abnormalities: Flat feet, excessive pronation, or abnormal bone structure can contribute to bunion formation
- Footwear choices: Tight, narrow, or high-heeled shoes can force toes into unnatural positions, accelerating bunion development
- Arthritis: Inflammatory conditions like rheumatoid arthritis can affect the joint and contribute to bunion formation
- Neuromuscular conditions: Certain conditions affecting nerve and muscle function can lead to bunions
- Injury or trauma: Previous foot injuries can alter joint mechanics and lead to bunion development
Understanding the root cause of your bunion helps Dr. Priya develop the most effective treatment plan for your specific situation.
Common Bunion Symptoms
Bunion Symptoms We Treat
Bunions cause a range of symptoms that worsen over time if left untreated. If you're experiencing any of the following, it's time to schedule a consultation with Dr. Priya:
Visible Bump on Big Toe
A prominent, bony protrusion on the side of your foot at the base of the big toe, which may become red, swollen, and tender to touch
Pain & Discomfort
Persistent or intermittent pain in the joint, especially when walking or wearing shoes; pain may be worse at the end of the day or after prolonged standing
Limited Toe Movement
Decreased range of motion in your big toe, stiffness in the joint, and difficulty bending or straightening the toe
Difficulty Wearing Shoes
Trouble finding comfortable footwear, pressure and rubbing from shoe contact, need for wider shoes or different sizes between feet
Inflammation & Swelling
Redness and inflammation around the affected joint, soft tissue swelling, and development of calluses or corns where toes rub together
Altered Gait & Balance
Changes in walking pattern to avoid pain, compensatory stress on other joints (knees, hips, back), and decreased stability and balance
Bunions are progressive, meaning they gradually worsen over time. Early intervention with conservative treatments can slow progression, while surgical correction provides permanent relief for advanced cases. Don't wait until the pain becomes unbearable—schedule your evaluation with Dr. Priya today.
BUNION TREATMENT OPTIONS
Comprehensive Bunion Treatment: Surgical and Non-Surgical Solutions
At NJ Sports Spine and Wellness, we offer the full spectrum of bunion treatment options. Dr. Priya will conduct a thorough evaluation including physical examination and in-house X-rays to determine the severity of your bunion and recommend the most appropriate treatment plan. Our goal is always to start with conservative treatments when possible, reserving surgery for cases where non-surgical approaches haven't provided adequate relief or when the deformity is advanced.
Non-Surgical Bunion Treatment
For mild to moderate bunions, or when surgery isn't the right option, we offer several effective conservative treatments:
Custom Orthotics & Footwear Modifications
Custom-made orthotics can help redistribute pressure away from the bunion, support proper foot mechanics, and prevent further progression of the deformity. Dr. Priya will assess your foot structure and gait pattern to design orthotics specifically for your needs. We also provide guidance on appropriate
footwear selection, including recommendations for shoes with wide toe boxes, proper arch support, and cushioning to reduce pressure on the bunion. Proper footwear is essential for managing symptoms and preventing worsening of the condition.
Shockwave Therapy for Bunion Pain
Our advanced shockwave therapy uses acoustic waves to stimulate healing and reduce inflammation in the affected joint. This non-invasive treatment promotes increased blood flow to the area, reduces pain and swelling, stimulates tissue repair and regeneration, and breaks down scar tissue and adhesions. Shockwave
therapy is particularly effective for reducing the soft tissue inflammation around bunions and can provide significant pain relief without medication or surgery. Many patients notice improvement after just a few treatment sessions.
Laser Therapy for Inflammation
Our therapeutic laser treatment penetrates deep into tissues to reduce inflammation and pain at the cellular level. Laser therapy increases cellular energy production (ATP), reduces inflammatory cytokines, improves circulation to promote healing, and provides pain relief without medications. This painless,
non-invasive treatment requires no downtime and can be combined with other therapies for optimal results. It’s particularly effective for managing the chronic inflammation associated with bunions.
Ultrasound Therapy
Therapeutic ultrasound uses sound waves to deliver deep heat to affected tissues, promoting healing and reducing pain. This treatment increases blood flow to the joint, reduces muscle spasm and tension, promotes tissue relaxation and flexibility, and accelerates the healing process. Ultrasound therapy is
especially helpful for addressing soft tissue problems around the bunion joint and can improve range of motion in the affected toe.
Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation
Our integrated physical therapy program helps address the biomechanical factors contributing to your bunion. Physical therapy includes stretching exercises to improve joint flexibility, strengthening exercises for foot and ankle muscles, gait training to reduce stress on the bunion, manual therapy to improve
joint mobility, and balance and proprioception exercises. Physical therapy is essential for managing symptoms, preventing progression, and preparing for or recovering from surgery.
Injection Therapy
For acute inflammation and pain, Dr. Priya may recommend targeted injection therapy. Corticosteroid injections can reduce inflammation and provide temporary pain relief, while other injection options may include viscosupplementation or regenerative medicine approaches depending on your
specific condition. Injections are typically used in conjunction with other conservative treatments as part of a comprehensive care plan.
Surgical Bunion Treatment
When conservative treatments haven't provided adequate relief, or when your bunion has progressed to the point where it significantly impacts your quality of life, surgical correction may be the best option. Dr. Priya specializes in the latest minimally invasive techniques that offer faster recovery, less pain, and excellent long-term results.
Minimally Invasive Bunionectomy
Our minimally invasive bunionectomy technique uses small incisions and specialized instruments to correct the bunion deformity with minimal tissue disruption. This advanced approach offers significant advantages: smaller incisions result in less scarring, reduced post-operative pain and discomfort,
faster recovery time compared to traditional surgery, lower risk of complications and infections, and less disruption to surrounding soft tissues. The procedure involves removing the bony prominence, realigning the bones of the big toe joint, and may include soft tissue adjustments to restore proper balance to the joint. Most patients can bear weight shortly after surgery and return to normal activities much sooner than with traditional bunion surgery.
Lapiplasty 3D Bunion Correction
Lapiplasty is a revolutionary 3D bunion correction procedure that addresses the root cause of the bunion by correcting the entire metatarsal bone position, not just shaving off the bump. Unlike traditional bunion surgery that works in only two dimensions, Lapiplasty corrects the bunion in all three planes of the
deformity. The procedure involves rotating the entire metatarsal bone back to its natural position, securing it with titanium plates for immediate stability, and addressing the true anatomical cause of the bunion. Benefits of Lapiplasty include correction of the root cause rather than just symptoms, dramatically lower recurrence rates compared to traditional surgery, earlier return to weight-bearing activities, permanent restoration of normal toe alignment, and correction of associated foot instability. This innovative procedure is ideal for moderate to severe bunions, recurrent bunions after previous surgery, or patients who want the most definitive long-term solution. Dr. Priya is specially trained in the Lapiplasty technique and can determine if you’re a candidate during your consultation.
Traditional Bunionectomy
For certain bunion types or patient situations, traditional bunionectomy remains an effective option. This procedure involves making an incision over the bunion, removing the bony prominence, cutting and repositioning the bone (osteotomy), and securing the bone with pins, screws, or plates to maintain the
correction. Dr. Priya will discuss whether traditional or minimally invasive surgery is most appropriate for your specific bunion anatomy and lifestyle needs. The goal is always to achieve optimal correction with the best possible outcome for you.
Integrated Post-Surgical Care
One of the unique advantages of choosing NJ Sports Spine and Wellness for your bunion surgery is our integrated approach to post-operative care. After surgery, you’ll benefit from on-site physical therapy to optimize your recovery, access to advanced healing modalities including laser therapy and ultrasound, chiropractic care to address any compensatory issues in your gait, and comprehensive rehabilitation protocols designed specifically for bunion surgery patients. This integrated care model means you don’t need to visit multiple facilities for different aspects of your recovery—everything you need is available under one roof, coordinated by one expert team who understands your complete treatment plan.
Determining the Right Treatment for You
During your comprehensive evaluation, Dr. Priya will assess the severity of your bunion using clinical examination and in-house X-rays, evaluate your activity level and lifestyle requirements, discuss your treatment goals and expectations, review your medical history and any previous treatments, and assess the overall health of your foot and ankle. Based on this thorough evaluation, she will recommend a personalized treatment plan designed specifically for your needs. Whether that's starting with conservative care or proceeding directly to surgical correction, you'll receive expert guidance every step of the way.

Your Bunion Treatment Journey
Understanding what to expect can help you feel more confident about seeking treatment. Here’s what your journey with NJ Sports Spine and Wellness will look like:
Initial Consultation & Evaluation
Your first visit begins with a comprehensive evaluation. Dr. Priya will review your medical history and symptoms, conduct a thorough physical examination of your foot and ankle, assess your gait and biomechanics, perform in-house X-rays to evaluate bunion severity and joint alignment, and discuss your activity level, lifestyle, and treatment goals. This thorough assessment allows Dr. Priya to understand your unique situation and develop a treatment plan specifically tailored to your needs.

You’ll never feel pressured into any particular treatment. Dr. Priya’s goal is to ensure you understand your options and feel confident in your treatment decision.
Conservative Treatment Course (If Applicable)
If conservative treatment is appropriate, your care may include custom orthotics fitted specifically for your feet, physical therapy sessions to address biomechanical factors, shockwave therapy, laser therapy, or ultrasound treatments for pain and inflammation relief, footwear recommendations and modifications, home exercise programs, and regular follow-up visits to monitor your progress. Many patients achieve significant improvement with conservative care, especially when treatment begins early.
Surgical Treatment Journey (If Needed)
If surgery is recommended, Dr. Priya will guide you through the entire process:
Pre-Operative Phase:
- Detailed explanation of your specific surgical procedure (minimally invasive bunionectomy, Lapiplasty, or traditional bunionectomy)
- Discussion of anesthesia options
- Pre-operative instructions and preparation
- Arrangement of any necessary medical clearances
- Coordination with surgical center or hospital
Surgery Day:
- Most bunion surgeries are performed as outpatient procedures
- Surgery typically takes 1-2 hours depending on complexity
- You'll go home the same day with detailed post-operative instructions
- Pain management protocol will be clearly explained
Recovery & Rehabilitation:
- Follow-up appointments with Dr. Priya to monitor healing
- Transition from surgical boot/shoe to regular footwear (timeline varies by procedure)
- Physical therapy to restore strength, flexibility, and function
- Advanced healing modalities (laser therapy, ultrasound) to optimize recovery
- Gradual return to activities with guidance from your care team
Recovery timelines vary depending on the procedure and individual factors, but minimally invasive techniques typically allow for faster return to normal activities. Dr. Priya will provide you with a realistic timeline based on your specific situation.

We provide ongoing support to ensure your long-term success, including periodic follow-up visits to assess your progress, guidance on maintaining healthy foot mechanics, recommendations for appropriate footwear and activities, and availability for any questions or concerns that arise. Frequently Asked Questions
Frequently Asked Questions About Bunion TreatmentSurgery is typically recommended when conservative treatments have failed to provide adequate relief, the bunion pain significantly interferes with your daily activities, the deformity has progressed to the point where it’s difficult to find comfortable shoes, or you have limited motion in your big toe joint. During your consultation, Dr. Priya will assess the severity of your bunion and help determine whether surgery is the right option for you. Many patients successfully manage their bunions with non-surgical treatment, so surgery is reserved for cases where it’s truly needed.
Recovery time varies depending on the type of procedure performed and individual healing factors. With minimally invasive bunionectomy, many patients can bear weight within a few days to a week and return to normal activities in 6-8 weeks. Lapiplasty patients often have earlier weight-bearing due to the stability of the fixation, though full recovery still takes several weeks. Traditional bunionectomy may require 8-12 weeks or more for complete recovery. Dr. Priya will provide you with a specific timeline based on your procedure and individual circumstances. Following post-operative instructions and participating in physical therapy can optimize your recovery.
While any surgical procedure involves some discomfort during recovery, modern pain management techniques make bunion surgery much more comfortable than many patients expect. Minimally invasive techniques cause less tissue trauma, resulting in less post-operative pain compared to traditional surgery. You’ll receive a comprehensive pain management plan including appropriate medications, and most patients find their discomfort is well-controlled. Pain typically decreases significantly within the first week, and many patients report that the post-surgical discomfort is much more manageable than the chronic bunion pain they experienced before surgery.
Modern bunion surgery techniques, especially procedures like Lapiplasty that address the root cause of the deformity, have very low recurrence rates. The likelihood of bunion recurrence depends on the type of procedure performed, adherence to post-operative instructions including appropriate footwear, addressing any underlying biomechanical factors with orthotics if needed, and genetic factors. Dr. Priya’s advanced surgical techniques and comprehensive post-operative care, including physical therapy and biomechanical optimization, minimize the risk of recurrence. Most patients who follow their treatment plan enjoy permanent correction of their bunion.
Return to work depends on your occupation and the type of surgery performed. For sedentary jobs where you can sit with your foot elevated, some patients return within a few days to a week. For jobs requiring standing or walking, return to work typically occurs 2-4 weeks after minimally invasive surgery, or 4-6 weeks after traditional procedures. For physically demanding jobs requiring prolonged standing, walking, or heavy lifting, full return to work may take 6-8 weeks or longer. Dr. Priya will discuss your specific work requirements and provide guidance on when it’s safe to return to your job duties.
As with any surgical procedure, bunion surgery carries some risks, though serious complications are rare. Potential risks include infection, nerve damage, blood clots, delayed healing, overcorrection or undercorrection, recurrence, and stiffness in the toe joint. Dr. Priya uses minimally invasive techniques when appropriate to reduce these risks, and our comprehensive pre-operative evaluation helps identify and address any factors that might increase your risk. During your consultation, Dr. Priya will discuss the specific risks related to your procedure and answer any concerns you have.
Yes, many patients successfully manage bunions with conservative treatment, especially when treatment begins early. Non-surgical options at NJ Sports Spine and Wellness include custom orthotics to redistribute pressure and improve foot mechanics, shockwave therapy to reduce pain and inflammation, laser and ultrasound therapy for healing, physical therapy to address biomechanical factors, appropriate footwear selection and modifications, and injection therapy for acute symptoms. While these treatments won’t eliminate the bunion bump, they can often provide significant pain relief and prevent further progression. Dr. Priya will help you determine whether conservative treatment is appropriate for your situation.
Lapiplasty is a revolutionary 3D correction procedure that addresses bunions differently than traditional 2D surgery. Traditional bunionectomy cuts and shifts the bone in a single plane and shaves off the bunion bump, addressing the symptoms but not always the root cause. Lapiplasty rotates the entire metatarsal bone back into its natural position, corrects the bunion in all three dimensions, and uses titanium plates for immediate stability allowing earlier weight-bearing. This approach provides true anatomical correction and dramatically reduces recurrence rates. Lapiplasty is particularly beneficial for moderate to severe bunions, recurrent bunions, or patients seeking the most definitive long-term solution. Dr. Priya will assess whether you’re a candidate for this advanced procedure.
Driving after bunion surgery depends on which foot was operated on and the type of surgery performed. If your left foot was operated on and you drive an automatic transmission vehicle, you may be able to drive within 1-2 weeks or when you’re no longer taking narcotic pain medication. If your right foot was operated on, you cannot safely operate a vehicle until you can comfortably perform an emergency brake stop, which typically takes 4-6 weeks depending on the procedure. Dr. Priya will provide specific guidance about when it’s safe for you to resume driving based on your individual recovery progress.
We work with most major insurance plans. Because insurance coverage varies by plan and procedure, we recommend contacting our office to verify your specific coverage and discuss any out-of-pocket costs. Our knowledgeable staff can help you understand your benefits and answer any questions about payment options. We’re committed to making quality bunion care accessible and will work with you to maximize your insurance benefits.

I went into NJ Sports, Spine, and Wellness in excruciating pain, desperate for relief. The front desk crew are amazing, efficient, and empathetic. They got me in urgently and I started treatment with Dr. Tony Abregio. He spent considerable time with me assessing my condition. He advised me to follow up with an orthopedic doctor, and he ordered imaging. When my insurance company denied the CT he went to bat for me, and went above and beyond to get the test approved. Dr. Abregio is highly skilled in hands on modalities. He incorporates massage, stretching, and adjustments to bring relief. He listens and after clinically evaluating, he formulates a treatment plan. The crew on the floor are wonderful, Mariah, Claudette, Julien, and everyone on the team work with you and give you encouragement along with therapy. When you hurt and can’t get a break from the pain, you find respite here. Ultimately I am feeling much better. If you have chronic pain or you get injured, NJ Sports and Spine will get you better. Thank you to the whole team!

My experience so far with the rehab team has been incredible. OT Alyssa is the primary therapist I have seen and she is phenomenal at what she does. I appreciate her intentionality with my treatment when we meet 1-on-1. She makes sure to ask how I’m doing and checks in with my progress. I highly recommend Alyssa; she is the perfect balance of personable/caring and knowledgeable. The exercises provided to me are challenging but are effective to my healing process. Techs David, Zaire and Liam are the best! They are attentive when helping me with the exercises assigned to me and go above and beyond to make sure my experience (and that of other patients around me) is as enjoyable as possible in spite of the physical challenges.

I just wanted to take a moment to thank you for all the help and excellent care I received during my recovery. From day one, I felt like I was in the best hands thanks to your professionalism, patience, and dedication.
A special thanks to Dr. Mayra Tamayo, who has been amazing throughout the entire process. Her support, knowledge, and kindness have made a huge difference and I truly appreciate all the effort she has put into my well-being.
And also thanks to Liam, Tavis, Kat, and Agnies. Your help and support were excellent throughout my recovery. Thank you.

I’ve had an amazing experience at NJ Sports Spine & Wellness! I spent a lot of time researching the perfect place for PT after knee surgery, and I'm glad I came here. The staff is friendly and supportive. Katelynn is a fantastic OT who doesn't rush her patients and has worked wonders on my knee since surgery. Liam is incredibly knowledgeable about ACL surgery recovery and tailors the sessions to my needs. Everyone here pushes me to improve and always makes sure I’m comfortable every step of the way. Everyone is awesome, but I'm glad I get to work with Tori, Alyssa, Agnes, Kat, and Tavis often. I highly recommend NJSS&W for anyone looking for personalized, thoughtful care!
