Physical Therapy:
The field of Physical Therapy (PT) aims to rehabilitate individuals who have experienced injury, illness, or disability by restoring their mobility and function. Physical therapists cater to patients of various ages and capabilities, ranging from young athletes to senior citizens, in order to help them surpass physical limitations and improve their standard of living with advanced knee pain treatment in Hazlet, NJ.
At NJ Sports Spine and Wellness, our physical therapy program was founded on a patient-centric philosophy, where physical therapists work closely with patients to get a deep understanding of their goals, preferences, and capabilities. In doing so, they can create a tailor-made treatment strategy to address their unique knee pain with the goal of avoiding a knee replacement. Treatment may involve exercises that are therapeutic in nature and can include:
This unique knee pain solution involves physical therapists using skilled manual therapy techniques to help improve your joint range of motion while simultaneously reducing your knee pain.
During joint mobilization, a physical therapist applies targeted pressures or forces to a joint in specific directions to improve its mobility. The intensity of the force applied can vary, and it is adjusted based on the patient's comfort level. Joint mobilization is generally pain-free.
Advanced Mechanics and Technology:
While knee pain is a common symptom that affects millions of Americans every year, no two cases of knee pain are ever exactly alike. Some types of knee injuries require non-traditional solutions. At New Jersey Sports Spine and Wellness, we offer a range of treatments that leverage mechanics and technology to help patients recover from injuries while treating inflammation and pain as well as resolve the root cause of the pain.
The Alter® Anti-Gravity Treadmill is equipped with NASA Differential Air Pressure (DAP) technology, which is a precise air calibration system that uses the user's actual body weight to enhance rehabilitation and training. By utilizing a pressurized air chamber, the AlterG allows patients and athletes to move without any pain or restrictions.
This advanced knee pain treatment in Hazlet, NJ uniformly reduces gravitational load and body weight up to 80% in precise 1% increments. The results can be incredible, with patients reporting benefits such as:
The Alter® Anti-Gravity Treadmill can monitor various metrics such as speed, gait pattern, stride length, and weight distribution. With real-time feedback and video monitoring, your rehabilitation team can promptly and accurately identify issues and pain points or monitor your progress throughout your knee pain rehabilitation journey.
One of the key benefits of this cutting-edge equipment is that it replicates natural walking and movement patterns without the artificial feel that hydrotherapy or harnesses create. This makes it an excellent choice for faster recovery after knee injuries or surgeries, as it allows for early mobilization while also preserving strength. Furthermore, it is ideal for sports recovery as athletes can use it for physical conditioning maintenance.
Our advanced treatment modalities for knee pain include laser therapy, which harnesses the revolutionary power of light through photobiomodulation (PBM). LiteCure™ low-level laser therapy is available for acute and chronic types of knee pain and can be hugely beneficial when coupled with physical therapy, occupational therapy, chiropractic care, and sports recovery care.
PBM is a medical treatment that harnesses the power of light to stimulate the body's natural healing abilities. The photons from the light penetrate deep into the tissue and interact with mitochondria, which results in a boost in energy production. This interaction sets off a biological chain reaction that increases cellular metabolism. Utilizing low-level light therapy has been shown to:

At NJ Sports Spine & Wellness, we know that every patient requires a personalized approach to chronic knee pain and condition management. Sometimes, our patients need access to pain management professionals, who can offer relief in conjunction with physical therapy and other solutions like low-level laser therapy.
Two of the most common services we offer for pain management includes acupuncture which can assist in avoiding knee replacement surgery.
Acupuncture is a common treatment for knee pain that involves inserting thin needles into specific points in your knee. This ancient Chinese medicine has gained popularity in Western culture due to its effectiveness in treating various conditions with minimal side effects.
Acupuncture works by stimulating the nervous system to release various biochemicals, including endorphins and other neurotransmitters. The release of these chemicals helps to reduce inflammation, decrease pain perception, and improve overall blood circulation.
Multiple studies have shown that acupuncture can be effective in treating knee pain caused by a variety of conditions, including osteoarthritis and injuries related to physical activity like running. Acupuncture can also help reduce inflammation, improve muscle function, and decrease pain perception, making it a viable treatment on its own or as an addition to traditional treatment methods like physical therapy.
When undergoing acupuncture, a professional acupuncturist will insert thin needles into specific acupoints on the skin. These needles are left in place for roughly 20 to 30 minutes and may be gently stimulated for an enhanced effect. Patients might experience a slight tingle or warmth at the needle insertion site, but overall, acupuncture is considered a painless procedure.
Acupuncture has been a trusted and effective treatment option for thousands of years. The World Health Organization (WHO) recognizes acupuncture as a legitimate form of healthcare, and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has even funded research studies to explore its efficacy for a range of medical conditions. Mayor Michael Sachs and the Township Committee recognized three young Hazlet artists on June 11, 2025 for their winning designs in the new Summer Bookmark Contest, a creative initiative organized by the nonprofit Friends of Hazlet Township Public Library.
In partnership with the district's local elementary schools, the Friends group invited students to design original bookmarks celebrating summer reading. Each participating school selected their top 10 entries, from which the Friends chose one winner per school. Those winning bookmarks are now available to pick up from the Hazlet Library. The printing was sponsored by Caring for Angels NJ, and the top designs from the schools are on display at Hazlet Library for all to enjoy.
Congratulations to all the young artists who participated and helped bring creativity and color to our Library!

With $800k Secured in Grants, Hazlet Returns for Third Funding Round
Hazlet Township continues to make steady progress toward the development of a year-round indoor recreation facility —a major project that will expand recreational opportunities for people of all ages.
The proposed 25,000-square-foot facility is planned for Veterans Park, on the site of the former outdoor roller hockey rink, which has been closed for several years due to disrepair.
At the request of the Township Committee, engineers presented an updated concept plan on July 9, 2024. The design features a flexible layout to accommodate Pickleball courts, a multipurpose athletic court and a fitness area.
To help fund the project, Hazlet Township is actively pursuing support from the Monmouth County Municipal Open Space Grant Program, which provides matching grants for local parks and recreation improvements. In 2023, the Township secured $343,000 in first-phase funding. This was followed by a second award in 2025 of $475,000 —nearly the maximum amount available. The Township also recently received a $95,000 grant from the New Jersey Local Recreational Improvement Grant Fund.
With a total of $913,000 in grant funding already secured, Hazlet is currently applying for a third and final grant, which could provide up to $500,000.
The Township’s goal is to have all funding in place and the facility completed by 2027. In the meantime, the Township Committee has awarded the contract for design, and is now in the final phase.
This recreation building project reflects Hazlet’s ongoing investment in quality-of-life enhancements for the community. It aligns with the goals of the Monmouth County Open Space Program, which supports efforts to preserve open space, improve parks, and beautify local communities.
Mayor Michael Sachs expressed his appreciation for the project, noting it will be a perfect addition to Veterans Park, just steps away from the Skate Park, Bocce Courts, Swim & Tennis Club, Pickleball Courts, Playgrounds and James J. Cullen Center.
"We're grateful to the Monmouth County Board of County Commissioners for their continued support," said Mayor Sachs. "Having a year-round indoor recreation center right here in Hazlet means people in the local community will not have to go far to stay active, healthy and have fun all year round."

Hazlet Township's application to construct a new indoor Recreation Facility with Multipurpose Courts was among those chosen. The township was selected for funding and offered a $475,000 grant, which is nearly the maximum! This follows a grant of $343,000 in the 2023 round. These are matching grants to go towards eligible project costs. The Recreation Building project, which would be built at the site of the closed outdoor roller hockey rink, is in the early planning stages.
The open space program aims to preserve open space, enhancing local parks, and further beautify Monmouth County communities. Mayor Sachs expressed his gratitude to the Commissioners for their continued support.

At the Township Committee's request, engineers presented an updated concept plan July 9, 2024 for a 25,000-square foot recreational facility to replace the shuttered roller hockey rink in Veterans Park. The township is seeking to build the facility with matching grants from the Monmouth County Municipal Open Space Grant Program.
In 2023, in the first of three phases, the township was awarded a $343,000 matching grant.
On July 11, 2024 the township submitted for the 2024 Monmouth County Municipal Open Space Grant Program for the second phase of the project.
The preliminary design calls for a flexible layout that can accommodate Pickleball, a Multi-purpose ball court and Fitness area. The township is aggressively applying for additional grants to offset the cost. The goal is to have all the funds in place and building completed by 2027.

HAZLET, NJ — The Hazlet Township Committee unanimously adopted a $24.7 million spending plan for 2025 at a recent committee meeting.
The budget, which was first introduced in April and adopted in late May, calls for no increase in the municipal tax levy for the average town homeowner for the third year in a row, township officials said.
Mayor Michael Sachs called the budget a “remarkable accomplishment for the taxpayers of Hazlet.”
“While other portions of the total property tax bill outside of our control are going up, the portion that the Township Committee oversees does not increase taxes for the average homeowner,” Sachs said. “We will continue to work on behalf of the taxpayers to do our part in keeping Hazlet affordable, while continuing to invest in new projects and recreation upgrades.”
For 2025, the amount to be raised from taxation from Hazlet’s residential and commercial property owners is $16,520,944.76, which is less than 2024 by a difference of $45,409.64, officials said.
This means that the amount the average taxpayer will pay for the Municipal Tax portion of their total property tax bill will be slightly lower than last year. For comparison:
Based on the estimated rates for 2025, municipal taxes (under the control of the Township Committee), along with the Municipal Open Space tax, account for about 22% of a resident’s total residential bill.
The rest of the Property Tax Bill includes county taxes (about 11%), schools (about 64%), and fire district (about 3%).
The 2025 budget also reflects increased investment in Public Safety & Capital programs, officials said, which include:
The budget is supported by strong revenues coming from interest earned on investments, increased commercial ratables and a tight rein on spending, officials said. Administrator Rob Bengivenga and CFO Alexis Caufield were credited with the town's stable finances.
According to township officials, a recent Moody’s financial rating report commended Hazlet’s “prudent budgeting practices, which help it maintain financial stability and support the township’s strong creditworthiness.” The report also noted that Hazlet boasts one of the lowest debt ratios in the county, officials said.
Deputy Mayor Peter Terranova expressed gratitude to the township’s employees for their hard work and commitment.
“Thank you to all our Township employees for continuing to make these results possible," Terranova said. "Together, we will work to ensure that Hazlet remains a great place to live, work, and raise a family.”
